Simple Travel Checklist for Your Miniature Schnauzer
Weekend Car Trip

Safety

A comfortable crate is the safest place for your dog to travel. The crate needs to be large enough to allow your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down.

Don't leave your dog unattended in hot weather!   Even in cool weather, a car can get too hot in the sun. If you do need to leave your dog briefly, find a shady area to park your car, open car windows enough to provide ventilation and check your dog's well being every few minutes.

To avoid injury, don't let your dog stick his/her head out the window or ride loose in the back of an open truck.

Packing

You can use an inexpensive soft carry-on type bag as your dog's "suitcase". You'll want to pack:

bullet Leash and collar (with identification and immunization tags)
bullet Copies of:
bullet rabies certificate
bullet shot records
bullet a recent picture of your dog
bullet your veterinarian's number
bullet if traveling across state lines, a current health certificate.
bullet Doggie first aid kit
bullet Any special medication, enough for the trip
bullet Food and water. Unfamiliar food and water can upset your dog's system. Using bottled water ensures you have water of a stable quality on hand. Have enough to meet your dog's needs for at least 24 hours.
bulletHint: Water bowls made especially for traveling, like "waterholes", are available and you can use disposable plastic or paper bowls for food for easy cleanup.
bullet Favorite toys
bullet Extra crate pads
bullet Paper towels in case your dog gets sick and for use as a good citizen to "clean up" when walking your dog.
