Why Every Puppy Should Belong to a Dog Club

The question has been posed “Why should every puppy belong to a dog club?”  The answer is quite simple.  Let us view the issue from several viewpoints:  the puppy, the owner, the breeder, the club and society in general.

Puppies need to be good citizens.  What better way to find out how to behave, to be trained and to learn from others than a local specialty dog club?  Dogs of a similar nature are abundant.  Most have been educated by their owners and provide a valuable role model for the developmental process.  All dogs need to be good citizens.

Owners need to be responsible.   Membership in a dog club will enhance one’s knowledge of good health, proper grooming and obedience for the breed.

Breeders need to educate.  It should be the primary focus of any dog club to educate its members on the maintenance of good dog health, proper grooming and obedience for the breed.  It is equally important that club members and the public be well informed on breed health, temperament and conformation.

Clubs needs to encourage.  A good dog club should encourage its membership to learn about the breed.  Clubs should provide educational programs to their members on the maintenance of good dog health, proper grooming and obedience.  Clubs should provide an informal forum for feedback to breeders on the quality of their breeding programs in the areas of health, temperament, and conformation.

Society needs to demand excellence in the breed.  Only with the informed societal demand for excellence in Canine health, temperament, behavior, and conformation will the quality of the breed be directed higher.  Breeders can provide role models and peer pressure and education to each other to always seek to improve the breed.

That, quite simply, is why the San Joaquin Miniature Schnauzer Club Breeders recommend membership in our club to every new pet owner!
